He could still taste the blood of the High Prince on his tongue, and the fear and rebellion of Verikhan lingered in his finely tuned nostrils. For this immortal being, the events of the past decades were as clear as if they had just occurred, and he momentarily lost himself in the deep betrayal of the past king. Then, his head turned from side to side as his tongue once again darted into the air, seeking that which pulled him from his two-decade-long slumber.
His eyes narrowed down to nearly invisible slits and he hissed, steam rising into the frigid air of the cave. Foolish, foolish, two-faced human.

The winter air bit into her skin as she stepped outside the door, unprotected from the elements in her cotton trousers and tunic. Sabina ignored the painful touch and took several gulps of air, clearing her mind from the horror that the children must have felt in those moments before they stumbled into this world.
A high-pitched screech behind her was followed by a loud thump and low groan. Sabina spun around to fling open the door, cursing the few seconds it took for her eyes to adjust to the dimness within the structure. Henri stood, knife in hand, between Gabriella and the stranger with the purple eyes.
The man was on his knees, unarmed, one hand pressing around the arrow shaft in his chest while the other supported his weight. The children remained asleep; their bodies past the point of arousal, and the other occupants of the infirmary looked too tired and hurt to bother caring.
Gabriella shrieked a warning. It startled me, though. It scared me. Sabina stared at him a moment, before carefully walking forward. She approached him as she would an injured wild animal, slowly, calmly, keeping her eyes fixed on his face and shoulders, aware of every slight motion. The man kneeled on the ground, breath coming hard, the arrow shaft rising and falling as new blood trickled around the smooth wood. His eyes narrowed in concentration, and then he shook his head.
She sucked in her breath as his head dipped down in exhaustion, the action revealing his neck, and a black circle with a jagged sunburst and series of lines. Rhea Aralia lived an uneventful life in Virginia, until the fateful night of her kidnapping. Taken to a strange realm of destruction, despair, and mysterious people with dark secrets, the young woman must learn a new way of life to survive.
With the help of her new companions, Rhea discovers the courage to defy the tyrant King Verikhan and his heir, the cleverness to deceive the court, and the power within herself to transform this world of darkness into one of beauty and hope. Will Rhea triumph over those who seek her destruction, or will she be forever lost in the darkness known as Kaldalangra? Throughout the majority of the book, I shipped Mateo and Rhea Rateo? I don't know what to call them yet, but I'm on Team Mateo!
Savin: Liked him! Loyal and kind Nyssa: Eh, didn't really care for her Everyone else: Neutral Pros to the book: Unique, interesting, and a fun adventure! Cons: Gets confusing easily so you have to read carefully, sometimes rereading helps. Too many characters so it was hard to remember them.
It reminded me of Games of Thrones, you remember the main ones and forget all the others. So do I recommend it? I hate fantasy, but would gladly read this again! Probably will! Aug 02, Karen Voitik rated it really liked it. She seems to be a lonely grad student. Her friend, Matt, and her decided to change their relationship from one of friendship to romance. On the night of their first date, Matt disappears, no leads. She is starved and left to die on a rock. She befriends the strange creatures and survives. Shocked that she survived, she becomes the new mate for the Prince, who, it turns out is a brainwashed, Matt.
His name is now Mateo. This kingdom is cruel and ruled by a cruel king and equally cruel Mateo, who does not know who Rhea is or who he used to be. Rhea is assigned a guard, Rowan, who is rude to her. They were seamlessly woven into the story, as opposed to listed out, like a laundry list. I did not understand why Rhea could not return to her world.

The book stated it was impossible, yet the king sent men to kidnap people multiple times, how did they get to Earth? A minor flaw in the plot. There was a lot of violence and implied sexual aggression, but there weren't any sex scenes. I didn't really mind the lack of descriptive sex, but sometimes there needed to be a bit more description into the characters' feelings in order to explain the actions.

For example, on the trip that Rowan and Rhea take to visit other towns, they end up in love when they return. Nothing specific happens on the trip, but Rhea seeing a softer side to Rowan. When did the love stuff happen? I recommend the story to those who love epic tales of romance and intrigue. This is not a story heavy on the "curl your toes" type of adult only romance. Dec 20, Mucui rated it really liked it. I like how she was just kidnapped by some strangers and brought into the other world. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
