About The Author

Oct 26, Vontel rated it really liked it. Visually stunning photographs throughout of the BC mid-coastal rainforest areas, and written with the language of the world view and concerns of the author, who is a co-founder of the "Pacific Wild" Foundation. He lives in, and promotes, the preservation and conservation of a large area of relatively pristine BC west coast and rainforest, a good portion of which is also traditional territory of various indigenous peoples as well as many of the large predators which live there.

Jan 19, Russell Nash rated it it was amazing. McAllister's moving account of the beauties and way of life in the Great Bear Rainforest serves his cause well. I was previously unaware of this part of the world, but now understand McAllister's concerns about commercial activities in the region. After reading the book, I spent some time on the Pacific Wild website and came to admire their sustained efforts to protect the Great Bear.

The author's voice in this book opened my eyes to many of those efforts. The photography in the book is wonderfu McAllister's moving account of the beauties and way of life in the Great Bear Rainforest serves his cause well. The photography in the book is wonderful. I especially enjoyed the author's account of diving among the humpback whales. As a reader outside of Canada, I feel powerless to do anything to help those mentioned in the book, but I encourage any who are mindful of conservation to read this book and learn about Pacific Wild's initiatives.

Feb 06, Sally rated it it was amazing Shelves: nature , photographs. Striking photographs, above and below water, from this Canadian wilderness area threatened by proposed tar-sand pipeline and tanker shipping. The text is very well written and heartfelt. Chapters cover the First Nations people living on the coast, the bears, wolves, herrings, sea mammals, and invertebrates.

The author has lived in the area for over 20 years, working to preserve this unique wilderness.

I found it a fascinating and moving book. Sep 15, Zach rated it really liked it. Stunning photos, and heartfelt, dire stories of ecological peril from the author's many years on the BC coast. Was happy to read a lot about contemporary First Nations society as well as stories from white Canadians doing their best to make amends for past wrongs by their ancestors. I left the book feeling scared for the future of these places, but renewed by the tenacity and wonder of the species that have called this coast home far, far longer than I ever will.

Jul 16, B. Moon Willow Press describes this ancient realm:. Marked by lots of rainfall, misty horizons, glacier-fed rivers and inland lakes, moss-laden forest floors, mature trees, fjords, and great biodiversity, the forest could be described as sacred. The area boasts some of the oldest and most mature trees on the planet, including Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, red cedar, and western hemlock. The fir and spruce can reach up to feet tall.

The western red cedar can grow 19 feet in diameter. Myriad species interact in this region—which combines freshwater, terrestrial, estuarine, and marine geography—including salmon, marine-diet wolves, black and grizzly bears, eagles, orcas, sitka deer, marbled murrelets, foxes….
