Myanmar, The Last Frontier?
We were picked up from Sepilok and had a comfortable [despite the roads! The steps we had been warned about looked a bit more daunting in the hot sun, but loaned a backpack in which to put his handluggage [my back pack was carried for me by Gert] my husband gainfully began the climb! We did get used to the steps as we went on 3 river trips while we were there - the early morning one starting at began with a mist over the river; we saw it clear and the sun rise.

Wow factor. The food at the lodge was super - just say when you book if there's anything you don't like. Our guide Rodal was great and full of information. We enjoyed the forest walk even if it was really hot! Just be careful not to step on Orangutan spore on the steps!! Date of stay: May Trip type: Traveled as a couple. Room Tip: There's only 4 rooms in a row. The fans are really effective - which was very important. Helpful Share.

We chose to stay here whilst at the Kinabatangan River because it looked different to all the other lodges right by the river, and we definitely made the right choice! It was amazing staying at the top of the hill instead - beautiful views and so much wildlife. We had wild pigs right by the dining area!
I really cannot fault this place. The staff are so friendly, accommodating and knowledgable, the room was comfy and clean, and the food was so so good!! We went on a few river cruises where we saw macaques, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, a wide range of birds and more!
The Last Frontier Boutique Resort Lodge, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia
Thanks to the Last Frontier guys for having us, and to Rodel for being a brilliant guide, it was an experience we will never forget! Date of stay: March Sara H wrote a review Feb Incredible visit to an increasingly threatened part of the world. Had the most incredible time here! My partner and I were blown away by the wildlife in the area, and the warmth and hospitality shown by Rodel, Jason and Gert. Rodel was an amazing guide, and a genuine pleasure to spend time with.
He has excellent eyes for wildlife spotting and was as excited about the animals as we were! We saw a huge old male orangutan on the first night of the river cruise, and a couple of females and a baby on the second day. We also spotted innumerable other monkeys including proboscis.
Jason was an awesome cook and great company - we really enjoyed our evening chats with him including his excellent advice for the rest of our travels around Malaysia he was particularly on-point about the leeches at Danum Valley, which did in fact, find their way to some erm, "surprising" areas on my partner's body We drove from KK and found the spread of palm oil plantations incredibly confronting. Beware that these do extend right up to the Bilit area, which means you're not exactly staying in the middle of the jungle.
THE LAST FRONTIER (Munsiyari) - Lodge Reviews & Photos - TripAdvisor
This is a fantastic opportunity to educate yourself about the impact of palm farming though, and once you're at the resort the plantations are not visible. The more visitors this area has the more pressure there will be on local government to protect what little jungle remains, so make sure you do include this on your itinerary! And despite the shrinking forest area, we probably saw more animals here than in Danum Valley.
One of the highlights of our trip, and would highly recommend. Date of stay: February Stewandbex wrote a review Jan Swindon 98 contributions 32 helpful votes. Truly Amazing. Okay having roughed it for 2 weeks around Borneo this was going to be our holiday splurge. Was it worth it Having read the reviews we knew to pack a lighter rucksack and leave our bags in the secure generator room at the bottom of the climb.
Yep the climb is epic, but you just take your time Within a few minutes of going to our room, the rustle of the trees revealed an inquisitive purple faced monkey. This is what we paid for. We thoroughly enjoyed all the tours and took an extra early morning one we never go back to any place twice and wanted to make the most of our time in beautiful Kinabatangan. We enjoyed the hearty meals and like many other reviewers suggested ditching the western alternatives.
The room was spacious and having a hot shower and comfy bed after a look day was the icing on the cake. Gert and Jason are fantastic hosts, I thoroughly enjoyed quizzing Jason for his recipes which he happily shared with me. We were very fortunate that we were the last couple staying before the resort closed down for Christmas which meant that Jason, Gert and Nicolo were returning for a well earned break in Sandakan.
